"My belief is that in fifty years, or possibly sooner, we shall reach the electrical millennium – the day when electricity will do its perfect work and be the general servitor of the people. The perfection of electrical science will, I think, have even a greater effect upon the industries, consequently upon the general condition of the people, than the introduction of steam."
THOMAS A EDISON (reprinted from The Miami Helmet, Piqua Ohio, March 6, 1884)
bringing HISTORY BACK TO LIFE
Contrary to the impression the reader may get from the name, The Piqua Edison Electric Illuminating Company is not a for-hire electrical contractor. In fact, this site is dedicated to chronicling the restoration of a very unique piece of history. The Piqua Edison Electric Illuminating Company began operation in April 1884. This central station was the 15th plant opened in the United States based on Edison's design, and the the 3rd in the state of Ohio. It provided electric lighting to Piqua for sixteen years before a growing demand out grew its capacity. Of the nineteen Edison central stations built from 1882 to the end of 1884, it is one of four that still remains, and the oldest standing in Ohio.
The past 130 years has not been kind to the building, but its history is rich and varied. This site will change as the restoration progresses and as we uncover more historical detail. Stay tuned as history comes back to life.
